About the Owens-Thomas House
You’ll love spending the afternoon at the Owens-Thomas House in Savannah. It is so big that the property occupies a whole block! Enter the home through the breathtaking columned entrance portico. Inside, you’ll be greeted by a sweeping staircase and beautiful arched second-story windows. The mahogany and brass details and elegant furnishings will make you feel like you are in another time. There are also slave quarters, a carriage house, and gorgeous gardens. Plus, it overlooks Oglethorpe Square, one of the most beautiful and historic parks in Savannah!
History of the Owens-Thomas House
The Owens-Thomas House, also known as the Richardson-Owens-Thomas House, was designed by English architect William Jay for Richard Richardson. Richardson was a Bermuda-born banker and cotton merchant that decided to settle in Savannah. Unfortunately, Richardson suffered financial setbacks shortly after the home was completed. It was lost to the Bank of the United States just three years after it was built. Later, congressman, lawyer, and one-time Savannah mayor George Welshman Owens purchased the beautiful home for $10,000. Today, this architectural gem is a National Historic Landmark!
Visiting the Owens-Thomas House
If you’d like to visit the Owens-Thomas House for yourself, you can tour on Sundays and Mondays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tours last 45 minutes and run every 20 minutes. During the tour, you’ll be taken through the carriage house, slave quarters, garden and main house. You also have the option to bundle it with a tour of the other Telfair Museum components: the Jepson Center and the Telfair Academy. Whether you choose to only visit the Owens-Thomas House or go to all three, take some time to step back and reflect on how life once was.
