Why Visit Ossabaw Island, GA?
To Escape Your Routine
Ossabaw Island Heritage Preserve is an unspoiled natural preserve that’s worth the trip. There are white sand beaches where loggerhead turtles and endangered wood storks nest, as well as mysterious dunes, lush maritime forests, and dark swamps. It makes for the perfect escape from all your worries. Guests are welcome to stroll the 15-mile shoreline and take in views of mangled trees and soaring birds. Breathe in the pure air of nature and relax in a heavenly setting!
Tip: You can bring your dog! Be sure to keep your pet on a leash to protect the area’s fragile habitat.
To Get Closer to Nature
Ossabaw Island is one of Georgia’s largest barrier islands and contains 26,000 acres of wooded uplands and marshlands. These areas provide a habitat for various wildlife species including loggerhead sea turtles, wood storks, alligators, wild boar, and more. While the island is popular with researchers who study nesting turtles and migratory bird patterns, Ossabaw also offers amazing opportunities for animal lovers and curious visitors. While you’re there, get a closer look at the island ecosystem and learn how to preserve it!
To Live a Unique Experience
The Ossabaw Foundation organizes two-night camping trips at a number of primitive campsites and lodges on the north end of the island. These overnight stays allow visitors to roam the entire 26,000-acre island. Be sure to check out an Ossabaw Island map before heading out!
How Do You Get to Ossabaw Island?
Situated between Wassaw Island and the Ogeechee River, Ossabaw is only accessible by private boat — no ferry crosses the Ossabaw Sound. Several local boat captains offer charter service to the island from docks and marinas on the mainland. However, most charter licenses are limited to just six passengers. Larger groups may want to consider renting a pontoon boat, which can transport 20-40 people at a time, or take a large group tour with Bull River Cruises. Tybee Island Charters is a great option for small groups of six or less.
