6 Free Things to Do in Savannah

1. Visit Bonaventure Cemetery

Located on a scenic bluff overlooking the Wilmington River, Bonaventure Cemetery is Savannah’s most famous cemetery. Several famous figures are buried here, including poet Conrad Aiken, Academy Award winner Johnny Mercer, and Georgia’s first governor, Edward Telfair. Guests can take a self-guided walking tour of the cemetery or join free guided tours every second Sunday. The cemetery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

2. Admire the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is an iconic symbol of Savannah. It’s the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Georgia and features towering steeples and incredible stained-glass windows. Take a few minutes to admire the architecture, then walk inside and view the impressive murals, altar, and choir area. The church is open for free tours Monday through Saturday.

3. Stroll the City Market

Did you know that the Savannah City Market has been the commercial and social center of the city since the early 1700s? The historic four-block area boasts a wide range of restored warehouses and storefronts for entertainment, shopping, and dining. Most of the goods are affordable, but if you’re tight on cash, feel free to window shop or spend the day people watching.

4. Enjoy First Friday Fireworks

Rousakis Riverfront Plaza is the place to be on the first Friday of every month. Visitors can enjoy live music, great food, and a spectacular fireworks display right on the water. It’s perfect for an inexpensive night out with the family!

5. Take a Ferry Ride

For a scenic view of the Savannah River, catch a free ride with the Savannah Belles Ferry on River Street. (You can also catch it on the other side of the Savannah River at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort).
