Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia, is known for the famous park bench scenes from the critically acclaimed movie Forrest Gump. The film ended up earning over $677 million worldwide and garnered multiple awards and nominations, including Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and People’s Choice Awards, among others. Today, the Forrest Gump bench in Savannah is a valuable pop culture artifact and is one of Hollywood’s hottest collector’s items. Here are some things you should know about this famous seat.

Where to Find the Forrest Gump Bench in Savannah

In the opening shot of the film, a feather floats high above the trees, then sweeps down past the Independent Presbyterian Church and makes its way toward Chippewa Square. The feather eventually lands at the base of a park bench. Tom Hanks, who plays the role of Forrest, sits on this park bench for about 80% of the film telling his life story to anyone who will listen. The bench that Hanks/Forrest sat on was actually a movie prop that has since been moved to the Savannah History Museum. But the location of the bench in Chippewa Square is still a popular spot for photographs.

History of Chippewa Square

Bisecting Bull Street, Chippewa Square was built after the American Revolution in 1815. The name of the square commemorates the 1814 victory of the Battle of Chippewa in Upper Canada. Under the command of Major General Jacobs Jenning Brown, the American forces defeated the British. However the sculpture in the middle of the square isn’t Brown – it’s actually James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia Colony. This stunning statue was placed in the square in 1910 and still stands today.

A number of historic buildings can be found around Chippewa Square. Visitors can admire the Independent Presbyterian Church (1817), the First Baptist Church (1833), and the Philbrick-Eastman House (1844). The square is also home to the Historic Savannah Theatre, the oldest theater in the United States. It was once the center of Savannah’s nightlife and entertainment and still produces shows nightly.
