Be Mesmerized by the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

A Step Into History

The cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Georgia. Even though the actual cathedral was built in the 1870’s, the congregation was created a century before by French Catholic immigrants, who called it the congregation of St. Jean Baptiste.

In 1898, the building was almost completely destroyed by a fire, and thousands of Savannah residents watched it burn to the ground. Only the outside walls and the two spires remained. Reconstruction started the following year and was entirely based on the original plans. In 1900, the cathedral of St. John the Baptist was complete again.

One of Savannah’s Most Beautiful Buildings

The cathedral of St. John the Baptist is an absolute gem when it comes to Savannah’s buildings. You can’t help but be in awe of this massive French gothic-style church, with its big white walls, golden lines, and two green spires standing up in the sky.

The interior is just as impressive. Once you step inside, you can feel the weight of tradition around you. The old European style is very much represented, with long granite columns and rows of dark wood benches. Along the walls are rare and beautiful Austrian Tyrol stained glass windows that will leave you with a sense of wonder.
